Referring to any style of art as Primitive is truly disingenuous as well as highly deceptive because it could easily lead people to believe that it is inferior or even substandard. In fact, there is absolutely nothing further from the truth. Thus, I would have much preferred if they would have called this form of art “Early Art” or “Ancient Art” instead of Primitive, but no one seems to care what my preferences are on this issue. But the fact is that Primitive Art does have an alternate name which is slightly less misleading and that is Naïve Art and it is sometimes also referred to as Country Folk Art.
Being that as it may, Primitive Art, Naïve Art or Country Folk Art refers to a wide range of art media such as sculptures, drawings, paintings, illustrations, images, weaving, embroidery, furniture, home décor, jewelry, masks and more. And all of these are then somewhat more simplistic, they only allude to realism rather than reproducing it, and they are less encumbered with details than many other forms of art. Furthermore, as Primitive Art usually deals with spirits, demons, angels and deities; so they follow laws of magic, spirituality, mysticism, superstitions, legends, idealism, etc.; rather than the laws of perspective and pragmatism.
We do not know whether the Neanderthal man created art of any kind because we have, as of yet, not found any remnants to attest to that fact. However, we have plenty of proof that Homo-Sapiens which are considered modern men although their existence dates back to at least 160,000 years ago, have continually created art such as large and small sculptures; vibrantly colorful cave wall paintings; carvings in stone, wood and animal bones; masks and jewelry. As a matter of fact, art predates written languages by many decades.
Fortunately for the world of art and the preservation of the so called Primitive Art, the civilizations that became literate approximately 5000 years ago continued the traditions of their respective cultures by safeguarding and ritualizing their art forms and even expended old collections by never stopping to add more and more.
Primitive Art with its simplicity and beauty is so inspiring that it influenced the works of the world renown 20th century Spanish artist Pablo Picasso whose full name is, believe it or not, Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso (October 25, 1881 to April 8, 1973) and whose art is best known for its cubism as well as its primitivism.
