We are a society of high tech computerization with high resolutions and high definitions to all our 21st century electronics and gadgetry but primitive décor is as popular as ever and so it can easily be found at the sites of the mega retail vendors such as Amazon.com, eBay and Overstock.com.

Primitive décor which is often referred to by alternate names such Country Décor, Folk Décor, Rustic Décor, Cottage Décor, Tribal Décor and Naïve Décor is a decorative style that does not attempt to reproduce or replicate reality with all its accurate details but it rather vaguely alludes to it. So a primitive figurine, for example, may obviously give off an impression of male vs. female or child vs. adult vs. an old person, but its hands may lack all the fingers or its face may not include a mouth or its head may be missing hair, etc. Primitive style dishes, for instance, may be rough in texture and their motifs may be primitive little symbols and drawings which are so very different from the modern dishes that are ever so smoothly glazed with patterns of elegance and sophistication.

Whether we realize it or not and in spite of modernization, most of us still hang on to some of the old world primitivism by infusing or introducing some form of primitive art or another into our daily lives while others go way out and turn every room in their home into a country affair. Look around you right now. Do you see a statuette that is somewhat disproportioned? Do you see a hand woven basket filled with fruits or dried flowers? If so, guess what? You are looking at primitive décor. Have you purchased a ritual mask on your vacation to South America? Did your best friend give you a hand painted vase that she or he brought back from a visit to an Indian reservation? Those are most definitely pieces of primate décor. Is your bed covered with a quilted bedspread? Are your kitchen windows made of handmade lace? Once again — primitive décor.

Therefore, it seems that most of us if not all of us are into the appearance, the feel and the mood of the rustic country folk looks to some extent or another. But if you are seeking to attain more of the heartfelt warmth, the naïve innocence and the simplistic beauty of primitive decorations for your home or your office, I would advise you to look at the large retailers I have mentioned above but please do not limit yourselves and do take a close look at other sites such as:

  • PiperClassics.com where you will find primitive décor for every room in the house which include, furnishings, wall hangings, animal replicas, quilts, afghans, mirrors and much more.
  • AllysonPlace.com offers folk art prints, wall clocks, table runners, placemats, charms, glass jars, rugs, bedding and so on and on.
  • KimsPrimitives.com carries a wide selection of primitive dolls and teddy bears, wreaths, potpourri, barn stars, candles and other lighting fixtures, etc.

Primitive décor or primitive art is a very far reaching umbrella term under which falls a very large assortment of artifacts and decorative items ranging from the very tiny to the very large and they are made of a wide variety of materials such as cloth and wool weaves, wood, metal, grasses, glass, ceramics, stone and clay. Of course, there are modern day artists who have been inspired by primitive art and the most famous of them is Pablo Picasso but its origins go way back to the first Homo sapiens and cave dwellers.
